Connection to the Electricity Grid Request

Turn your request into energy. Connect to the grid.

Connecting a property to the electricity grid is the first step to having power, whether at home, at your business or at any other type of property. Throughout this page you can find information on the procedures, required documentation, timeframes, and costs associated with the grid connection request.

What types of grid connections are available?

There are different types of electricity grid connections depending on the property. In general, a grid connection may apply to:

  • a single property, such as a residential electrical installation;
  • a professional activity, such as a business or company;
  • or a collective installation, such as a building.

The classification of these types also depends on the purpose of the connection, the type of installation, and the duration of the electricity supply, which may be temporary or permanent.

In addition to standard grid connection requests, there are other types of requests that are more common among residential or professional customers, depending on the installation and supply needs. This distinction is for reference only and may vary according to the technical characteristics of each case.

Grid connection requests

  • Increase in contracted power: You should submit this request if the power to be contracted is higher than the maximum admissible power for your installation. If the desired power is lower than the maximum admissible power, you should contact your energy supplier, as a grid connection request is not required.
  • Change of delivery point location: This usually involves changing the location of the delivery point (service box) and, at the same time, the meter location, from inside the property to an exterior location with public access.
  • Network diversion: To change the location of existing electrical network elements (poles, lines, etc.). To submit this request, it is necessary to justify the reason and ensure that it is valid.
  • Construction works: To supply electricity temporarily to a location, with or without the need for a permanent connection at a later stage.
  • Events: To supply electricity to a specific event and only for the period strictly necessary for its execution. These power connections are typically intended for circuses, fairs, festivals, and street performances, among others.
  • Connection Conditions Requests: If the total power exceeds 41.40 kVA, this request must be submitted in advance. E-REDES will analyze the network and inform you of the connection conditions, which must be met before submitting the grid connection request.

How much does a Grid Connection Request cost?

E-REDES provides a grid connection cost simulator that estimates the costs of connecting your installation to the distribution network.
This simulator includes the initial charges (connection services), as well as the costs related to the quotation.

What are the initial charges and when do they apply?

After the request is submitted and analyzed, you will receive a notification with the initial charges related to the connection services, which, in accordance with the Commercial Relations Regulation, may include the following actions:

  • Site visit to assess the route and the connection point.
  • Inspection of the works.

The following elements are also included in the connection services:

  • Connection voltage level and connection point.
  • Materials to be used.
  • Route the connection elements.
  • Connection elements for exclusive use, where the network operator is required to build these connection elements.
  • Connection elements for shared use, where applicable.
  • Compensation for the site for a Transformer Substation, where applicable.

What documentation is required for each type of connection and how should it be completed correctly?

You can consult the required documents by connection type (PDF – 0.787 MB) and download the electrical data sheet with completion instructions (PDF – 1.52 MB) to help ensure the success of the process. In addition, it may be necessary to submit drawings, projects and other technical documents, depending on the complexity of the connection.

Note: If the Grid Connection Request is not submitted by the Customer, a duly completed “Third-Party Authorization Declaration” must also be provided.

Example quote for a connection request

Please refer to an example quotation (PDF – 0.403 MB) to better understand its structure, possible elements and overall layout.

If you choose an option that involves the Customer being responsible for the construction of connection elements, you should consult the list of entities authorized to carry out work on the E-REDES distribution network and select a recognized entity to perform the required works.

In the case of shared construction, the Customer typically builds the elements for exclusive use, while E-REDES builds the elements for shared use.

Please consult our step-by-step guide for Grid Connection Requests at the top of the page to understand the stages involved in each type of construction and the documentation required to complete each process.

Expected timelines for requests
After paying the budget, if there is construction by E-REDES, the following regulated deadlines are defined:
...
working days – Low-voltage without medium-voltage construction
...
working days – Low-voltage with medium-voltage construction
...
working days – medium-voltage
These deadlines are calculated from the date on which the Customer accepts the quotation and may be suspended if there is any pending issue associated with the request.

What payment methods are available?

Payment methods are defined according to the items described in the quotation. The Customer may choose between different options, as agreed with E-REDES. After selecting the construction option that best suits you, you will need to choose how to make the payment. You have a period of 30 working days to do so, otherwise your request will be cancelled.

If the construction option involves works to be carried out by E-REDES, payment may be made in two instalments of equal value: the first at the start of the works and the second upon completion and before connection (instalment payment).

Once the Grid Connection Request is completed, what is still required to have electricity?

When the process is completed, you will receive a notification with the Delivery Point Code assigned to your installation. Whenever the installation is of a permanent nature, you must ensure that it is certified by an electrical installation inspection body recognised by the Directorate-General for Energy and Geology (DGEG). This certification may be obtained through your responsible technician or via the portal provided by DGEG.

Certification of installations is mandatory for entering into an electricity supply contract. Once certification has been completed, you may contact an energy supplier to request the electricity supply contract, as well as the installation of the meter.

Use the Digital Service Desk throughout every stage of the process.
