With the full liberalisation of the electricity sector in 2006, all electricity consumers at all voltage levels are now free to choose their electricity suppliers.

Thus, electricity suppliers are now acting in a market regime and as suppliers of last resort in the regulated market. The latter guarantees the supply of electricity to all consumers, with tariffs set by the Energy Services Regulatory Authority (ERSE).

Licensed by the Directorate General of Energy and Geology (DGEG), the suppliers are responsible for managing the commercial relationship with final consumers, namely billing and customer service.

In order to have access to the networks, Suppliers establish a network use contract with E-REDES, which includes the general conditions approved by ERSE.
