An instrument of Citizenship

Lighting plays a primordial role in our lives, whether it is for lighting service or residential buildings, industrial lighting, signaling lighting, or public lighting.

Public Lighting is directly related to the humanization of spaces, namely the responsibility of creating safe and comfortable spaces during the period of absence of natural light. Like many other sectors, public lighting is also undergoing profound technological changes in the context of the digital revolution and the new services to be offered to smart cities.  

In a vision of Public Lighting management as intelligent and shared with municipalities, we actively collaborate in the definition and application of best practices, defining the type and level of lighting appropriate to daily life and the local environment of each public space, choosing the most appropriate equipment, to ensure interoperability with the solutions chosen by municipalities.  

Aiming to reduce 40% of Greenhouse Gas emissions (compared to 1990 values) by 2030, we contribute to the National Plan for Energy and Climate 2030 (PNEC) with different energy efficiency measures to be adopted at the Public Lighting level.

The Role of E-REDES
E-REDES is responsible for the distribution of low voltage electricity in the 278 municipalities of mainland Portugal, on an exclusive basis, and is committed to reducing consumption of public lighting. The implementation, conservation and management of the IP networks is the responsibility of the municipalities, but under the terms of the concession contracts for low voltage (LV) electricity distribution networks, the municipalities have delegated this responsibility to the distributor - E-REDES.
LED TECHNOLOGY
Investing in LED Technology

The investment in environmental promotion activities in 2021 was about 35.7 million euros (+26% compared to 2020), reflected with greater expressiveness in Energy Efficiency. LED lighting allows a reduction of between 50% and 75% of the consumption of sodium vapor luminaires, depending on the project conditions and the use or not of light flux management systems. Our goal is to continue this path and provide more and more Energy Efficiency services focused on reducing consumption in Public Lighting in municipalities, promoting the benefits of reducing electricity consumption and CO₂ emissions. Since the start of LED campaigns in 2016, we have installed over 896,000 LED luminaires, with very relevant economic and environmental benefits:

  • Reduced consumption of 384,000 MWh of electricity.

  • Savings of 40.4 million euros in the municipalities' bills.

  • Reduction of 67,000 tons of CO₂ emissions. For 2022 the investment plan estimates the installation of 225,000 LED luminaires that will contribute to the goal of reducing 172 ktCO2eq of carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions into the atmosphere by 2025.
